Publika je danas uživala u još jednom epskom finalu na Australian openu između Rafaela Nadala i Rodžera Federera. Kao pobjednik iz njega izašao je 35-godišnji Rodžer Feder (6:4, 3:6, 6:1, 3:6, 6:3). Suze su ispunile njegovo lice. Ovo je Švajcarčeva peta titula na ovom turniru, ukupno rekordna 18. grend slem. Zanimljivo da je Fedeks u svih pet finala slavio titulu protiv različitog igrača – 2oo4. protiv Marata Safina, 2006. protiv Markosa Bagdatisa, 2007. protiv Fernanda Gonsalesa, 2010. protiv Endija Mareja i 2017. protiv Rafaela Nadala.
Nadal je, primajući nagradu, čestitao je Federeru i timu.
– Nevjerovatno je kako on igra nakon tolike pauze. Svaka čast! Za mene lično, ovo je bio sjajan mjesec. Uživao sam u podršci koju mi dajete. Melburn će uvijek biti u mom srcu. Imao sam težak period gdje mi povrede nisu dale da napravim više. Rodžer je bio ovoga puta bolji. Moraću da nastavim da se borim, vraćaću se sljedećih sezona ovdje i pokušati da osvojim ovaj trofej. Ovaj moj je lijep, ali je ovaj ovamo (pobjednički, Federerov) je ipak ljepši – rekao je kroz smijeh ovu posljednju rečenicu Nadal.
Dodao je da je ovo najbolje organizovan turnir na svijetu.
Federer je zahvalio Nadalu na nevjerovatnom povratku.
– Mislim da ni jedan ni drugi nismo vjerovali da ćemo se vratiti ovdje. I da sam izgubio, povratak bi bio savršen. Tenis je težak sport. Znam da svi kažu kako su naporno radili, ja jesam. Bilo je teško proteklih šest mjeseci, nisam ni znao da ću moći da se vratim, ali jesam. Čestitam i Rafinom timu, ostanite na turu, dozvolite da Rafa igra, potreban je tenisu – kazao je Federer.

Bio je ovo njihov 35. međusobni duel. Rafael Nadal vodi 23-12.
