DAVID CLAYTON FOR MNE MAGAZIN: I consider ,,Simply Red” family

daveBand ,,Simply Red” is back after five years of hiatus with tour and new album to mark 30 years of their work.

Album ,,Big love” has recently been published and those songs, along old hits, will be presented on tour that starts on October 20th in Odense.

Biography of our guest, the keyboardist of group ,,Simply Red” and producer David Clayton, best speaks about this musician.

Born in the town of steel, Sheffield, his music path took him first to band ,,Celebration” in 1982, then groups ,,ABC”, ,,Texas”, ,,Human league”, ,,U2”, ,,Depeche mode”, ,,Kraftwerk”, ,,Bee Gees”, ,,Pet shop boys”, Pino Danielle, Robie Williams, David Bowie, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney, Boy George, George Michael, Elton John, Michael Hutchins, Tina Turner, Bjork and others.

He speaks about music, growing up and new projects in an interview for MNE magazin.

What was it like working on new songs with ,,Simply Red” and what is it like preparing for another tour with them?

– Well the album was fun as it was a live album generally. The band performing the tunes and being recorded. Great energy recorded at times! The tour we have not yet started preparing for, but will be fun. We are like a family.

Can you recall for our readers how did you come to play with ,,Simply Red”?

– I started with ,,Simply Red” many years ago as a session musician on ,,Stars”. I really started with ,,Simply Red” fully on the ,,Home” album.

,,Simply Red” had been on the music scene for 30 years and yet you never played in Montenegro. Your fans here would like you to visit Montenegro. Is it in your plans?

– I hope so! Montenegro is a place I have never been to. Do many bands come there?

You have worked with many musicians. Who was the most inspirational artist to work with?

– I have worked with many inspirational artists. I do consider myself fortunate! Too hard to answer this question, but ,,Depeche Mode” was a very big influence for me and I still love the music they make!

In what way has your childhood and life in Sheffield influenced your music?
– My childhood was an influence in such a way that I was living in a close industrial community and entertainment was high on the priorities of the public. There were many opportunities to perform in the social clubs of Northern Britain. This was my chance for an apprenticeship in music.

What are your fondest musical memories?

– I have many fond memories. Maybe my fondest was performing with George Michael and ,,Simply Red” on the same night and also KD Lang. So 3 great artists I played with in 3 hours.

What are your next music projects?

– My next project is of course the tour with ,,Simply Red”. Then I plan to do  another project with ,,Pressure Zone”, but live in 3 D audio, so it will only be a concert or more, depending on who wants to experience this Immersive Experience. It works so well at festivals. Maybe someone in Montenegro would like to help fund us to do a series of concerts for you wonderful people?

Websites are www.immersiveaudio.co.uk and www.pressurezone.co.uk.

Are you planning on maybe doing a soundtrack for a film?

– Yes, I am planning a soundtrack to accompany this 3 D spatial show. We also plan to do small films and music to accompany. Another ambition is to do a new ,,Blade runner” type soundtrack. I love the synthesized textures of Vangelis in the film. I would love to do a similar idea for a film. Using the synthesizer as the main feature.
