GFC: International designers captivate the New York Fashion Week

Photo: Global Fashion Collective

New York Fashion Week showcases international fashion designers twice a year. Global Fashion Collective (GFC) captivated the crowd with its designers’ upcoming fall 2023 collections. With designers from Japan, Indonesia, Mozambique, Mexico, and Korea, the audience saw lots of diversity and creativity throughout the show.

HEEYONGHeE's collection of women's wear was powerful to say the least. The collection was sexy and sophisticated with feminine details, yet still capturing a woman's strength and independence. It focused on reds, blacks, and whites and dabbled in a few other colors, earthy tones, and peppering in texture. Perfect for the metropolitan woman taking her from work to a hot night out.

Designer Hee-yong Shin of the brand ‘HEEYONGHeE’ is a new fashion designer who made her debut by participating in New York Fashion Week. She was invited to attend NYFW by GFC after she posted her master’s works for the graduate school of Hongik University Fashion Design on her website. As a designer and modelist, she independently conducts most of her experiments on pattern making and fabric development and gets her inspiration mainly from ‘visual phenomena’ and ‘conceptual art.’ ‘Spatialism,’ the first theme of ‘HEEYONGHeE,’ started from the concept of space that influenced minimalism. It is a collection that expresses slash, combination tucking, drilling, and holes.

Nolo showcased a mix of adult and kids’ New York-inspired streetwear with jewel tones, some whites, metallics, prints, and not to forget matching tops and bottoms.

Luis Corrales, better known as Manolo, is the emergent head designer of NOLO Mx Brand based in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. With a basis in graphic and interior design, he started his career as a fashion designer in 2017 while in his late twenties after finding fashion design his true passion.

He discovered his love for fashion after visiting New York, NY, and being inspired by the culture of absolute freedom of expression in the New York streetwear scene. Here he witnessed fashion used as a medium to reveal one’s true self and convey intimate ideas. He started designing custom pieces for local professional actors, dancers, and musicians from the urban scene, as well as for universities’ theatre and dance programs in and near Hermosillo, Sonora. Through fashion, he found an art form through which he could express himself in ways he always knew he wanted to.

Manolo returned to Sonora, Mexico, with a hunger to learn everything there is to know about high fashion design. Soon, he began making and wearing his clothing, which often elicited questions like “Where did you get that?” from friends, family, and strangers. A month after Luis made his first piece, he produced for local buyers and collaborated with national artists. In December 2017, NOLO became a brand design.

The first appearance of NOLO design in an international fashion event was in July 2018 at INTERMODA, an international fashion showcase in Mexico, and again in 2019. Then came an invitation to present at New York Fashion Week in February of 2020, where NOLO attended its first professional fashion show as an emergent designer presenting its Mexicanolo Collection. NOLO collaborated with the New York Based Sprayground brand in the same week. NOLO’s online store is coming soon.

Maison De Hoe put on an upbeat show with pops of colorful details and fun patterns.

Hanwei Su, a fashion designer in New York City and a Parsons graduate, presented her FW23 collection for her label during New York Fashion Week in February 2023.

SU’s independent life abroad from the time she was 15 years old until the present, her research into the connection between art and the self, and her exposure to western philosophy and education have all helped to shape her unique way of thinking and designing in comparison to her peers who grew up in a traditionally Chinese environment. She saw herself as the result of the clash between her sense of New York and the aspects of China that she felt were true.

She is inspired to keep working because she wants to contribute to society through clothes design and develop a more morally upright fashion business. Her conversations have continuously focused on rights, equality, sustainability, and humanitarian issues, which should be obvious. Instead of only discussing them intellectually, she focuses on practical solutions to environmental and societal problems, such as new systems, design techniques, and material experiments and practices. Her designs have been featured in publications. She has been awarded the Tishman Fund for Excellence in Climate, Environmental Justice, and Sustainability and reached the finals of the IYDC Sustainable Fashion Competition.

Lisa Ju's collection embraces and highlights female curves. Enter a world of fantasy featuring 12 couture art of this upcoming collection that will be shown and titled: “Renceum Réjouissances. “Renceum means sparkling in Sundanese, and Réjouissances means festivities in French. She is combining her background who live in Bandung and her immense passion for French couture designs. This time she infuses her ‘back to the root’ Indonesian culture into her artistry when appealing to an international audience. “I’m blessed to be influenced by a lot of different points of view growing up in Indonesia, which has so many different cultures, so many diverse textiles, crafts, arts, and yet a combination of original indigenous tradition and multiple modern foreign influences — that shaped me as a designer,” Lisa said.
Reinvent Indonesia’s traditional fabric: ,,Batik Priangan” and inspired by its patterns – the design is enriched with complexities of handmade eye-catching fabric manipulations techniques, applications of beads and crystal detailing, structural line design and also incorporates hand-painted fabric and heritage accessories from Indonesia artists to make it more avant-garde and also to support local artists.

Each gown not only underscores her unique ability to tap into Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage but also an array of influences – the interplay of female empowerment, strength, and vulnerability are all reflected in exquisitely rendered couture in astro dust, galactic cobalt, sage leaf, and apricot crush color and mood of each piece created to achieve a modern aesthetic and reflect the subtle sense of the theme without sacrificing the elegance and uniqueness as her signature style.

She launched her brand and atelier, LISA JU, in 2018, and she consistently turns heads and is inspired by everything she has done since then. One of the most historical moments of her fashion journey and representing Indonesia in the official international fashion week is no small thing. Still, for her, it is a natural progression from his great passion as a young fashion designer.

Lisa Ju presents artistic, colorful, feminine designs which appear uniquely structured. Her enchanting designs are refined, romantic, dazzling, sophisticated, and hugely popular for evening wear and wedding gowns. The designs incorporated delicate fabrics such as lace, chiffon, organza, and silk, and the ornaments she used added extra elegance.

With a wide range of clients from the baby boomer generation to the newest gen Z’s and back to the previous generations, she’s focusing on fearlessly challenging the difference of opinions and values between different generations. Lisa Ju balances the need for adaptability in an ever-changing business and market while still ensuring the core and signature style of the brand remain a key focus.
